Pastor's Points (Continued)
(Continued from top)

A team is already at work gather practical projects from area agencies and individuals in need. Categories of projects will range from light construction to yard work, cooking meals to neighborhood friendship parties. Each project will have a leader to coordinate our efforts and ensure necessary resources are in place. All projects will start at 8 a.m. be designed to last no longer than until 3 p.m.

Members can sign up to serve through their Sunday School class or as individuals. You sign up for the category that you feel best suited for, and we will match you with a project.

The Great Day of Service will be preceded by a prayer vigil asking God to use us as the hands and feet of Christ, meeting the spiritual as well as the physical needs of those whom we serve.

At the end of the day we’ll gather at Huntingdon college to share stories of how we saw God work and give Him praise for all that is done.

Robert McCloskey said, “I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I’m not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.” What we have here is a problem of communication. “Communication can be defined as a process by which we assign and convey meaning in an attempt to create shared understanding” (Superintendent of Public Instruction, Washington State). George Bernard Shaw said that “the problem with communication…is the illusion that it has been accomplished.”
In our world today, communication is a key ingredient in understanding each other. One of the huge problems in the Church and in our church is communication. Too often we think that, because we have said something, we have communicated. Sometimes we think that because we understand a situation that others understand that situation also. Because we are not communicating with one another, problems result. This causes a person to feel that he/she is rejected, and makes the other person defensive and anxious.

There is miscommunication in families, too. Frazer is family! Sometimes, for whatever reason, we do not communicate with our family members and it is not intentional. It is like the quote above from Robert McCloskey. When we have a misunderstanding in the family, the family ceases to function as a family. A fractured family is a dysfunctional family. The family that communicates (communions together… I just knew that I was going make this a “church-y” thing), lives in peace even when they don’t agree. Understanding of each side was achieved.
The GOOD NEWS about the Frazer family is that we are really working at communicating with one another and understanding one another. I have witnessed this in a number of settings from staff meetings, worship planning meetings, program staff meetings, the Joel Committee, the Men’s Ministry, the finance committee and the Board of Stewards. Good words have been spoken by our members in support of our work together. But words are not the only way to communicate. Body language tells a lot about your state of mind and spirit. When I see the raising of hands in praise in Wesley Hall and I see the holding of hands as we sing after the benediction in the Sanctuary, I know we created a shared understanding of the family of God. God is truly blessing us in a wonderful way.
Let me be clear at this point. Please understand what I am saying. We are communicating to each other, the city of Montgomery, and the rest of the world that we understand mission and ministry. I want to suggest that instead of EMIM (Every Member in Ministry), we should be EMIM2 (Every Member in Ministry and Mission). Only a lack of communication can keep us from being the Church that God wants. Have I communicated?

- Jim
