Pastor's Points
Church historian, Martin Marty, recalls a summer day when he was 8 years old and one of those grand miracles of childhood occurred: A watermelon truck overturned right in front of his house! The uninjured driver jumped out to watch helplessly as scores of neighborhood children from everywhere raced to the scene of that blessed event and dove into the spilled cargo for a sticky picnic on the pavement. Right in front of his house! That was the good news. The bad news was that Martin Marty was out of town that day, visiting his grandmother. He missed it. He never saw the overturned truck, never took part in the sticky feast. Life is like that sometimes; We are where the action isn’t. While the fortunate ones are there to catch the bouncing watermelons we are miles away playing card games with our grandmother. (more)

Pastor's Points (Continued)
(Continued from top)
Such is the story of Thomas. When Jesus first appeared to them, Thomas was missing. The disciples enthusiastically relate to him the story of the risen Christ but he refuses to believe their testimony. In fact, he says emphatically that, unless he not only sees but also touches those wounds, he will never believe. The verb is quite graphic: “Unless I thrust my finger and my hand into the place of those wounds, I will never believe!”
The Lord graciously accommodates him. A week after His resurrection, on the following Sunday, Jesus appears again with Thomas present. Jesus came, the doors having been locked, and stood in their midst, and said, “Peace be with you.” Then He said to Thomas, “Reach here your finger, and see my hands; and reach here your hand, and put it into my side; and be not unbelieving, but believing.” Thomas is so moved in holy awe that he has no need to touch or feel. The mere sight of Jesus’ wounds transforms him from an unbeliever to a believer. After a mere glance at those wounds he makes the highest theological confession of Jesus that is found in the New Testament: “My Lord and my God.”
When Jesus appeared to His disciples after their abandonment of Him the first words out of His mouth when He entered the room were “Peace be with you!” Not “Where were you guys?” Not “How could you have let me down?” Like Thomas and the other fearful followers we have all doubted Jesus. How do we deal with doubt? Steve Kilson suggests five “reasons and remedies for doubt.”
Be patient with the slow heart. Some people have doubts because they lack information. They do not know the facts that could help them believe.
Pray for the troubled heart. There are some who doubt because they are simply overwhelmed with confusion.
Refresh the faint of heart. Often doubts can arise from being tired or emotionally exhausted.
Encourage the fearful heart. A lot of us doubt because of self-esteem issues. Jesus offered the disciples peace in the midst of their fear. He still does the same today.
Love the wounded heart. Do you know someone who has been hurt? Love them! In Jesus name, love them! In time, your acceptance of them may open the door to a relationship with Jesus.
Frazer is open to doubters who are slow, troubled, faint, fearful and wounded. Come and discover “your Lord and your God!”
