Pastor's Points
BarryI am continually seeking to understand from Scripture, history, and from contemporary examples what it means to be a missional church. A missional church is not a church with just a mission program or strategy but rather a church that thinks about everything the way God thinks about the world. (more)

Pastor's Points (Continued)
(Continued from top)

What does a church look like that engages the culture in order to transform it? What does it mean to be a church for the neighborhood and for the nations? What if the church became a hope for the world rather than a fortress from the world?

Some advocate that the church should be “of” the culture. This kind of church embraces the culture so much that it loses its Christian distinctive. Others say that we should be “against” the culture. This means we oppose the culture even if it makes us irrelevant. Still others believe that the church should be “above” the culture. This causes the church to “super-spiritualize” life to the point of losing contact with a real and hurting world. I suggest that we should be a church “for” the culture so that we engage the culture in order to transform it. I offer some simple suggestions of what a church for the world looks like:

  1. We speak the language of our culture. It is imperative that we “love the world” that Jesus loves (John 3:16). That means engaging people in humility while demonstrating the difference the Gospel makes. We must be committed to making friends in the world. This is not just as an outreach strategy but the fruit of a Christ-changed heart.
  2. We care about people and their stories. We seek to understand, love and respect people unconditionally and serve them by showing them how the Gospel meets their deepest longings. To do this we seek to understand the culture’s hopes, dreams, stories, and fears. Then we show people that only Jesus can fulfill their greatest desires.
  3. We seek to be a Christian community that is counter-cultural.
We are called to be radically different from the world with regard to relationships, sex, money, and power. The love of Christ makes us different! We are called to radically love each other. When there is conflict we do not just walk away, but we actively work at reconciliation with one another. We live celibate in singleness and faithful in Biblical marriage for the glory of God. And while we maintain the high ideals of God’s expectations for His children, we love those whose lifestyles are different than ours. We count it joy to be radically generous in our giving of time, money, skills, and relationships working for justice and caring for the poor, weak and needy. We are committed to deeds of mercy and social justice and evangelism and church planting.
  4. We live out Christianity in work and recreation. We can be distinctively Christian in our work and recreation. We learn what in our culture is good and can be enjoyed and celebrated and what in our culture is antithetical to Christ and Scripture and must be rejected, and what in our culture can be renewed and adapted for good. We encourage and celebrate Christians who are advancing the Kingdom of God everywhere.
  5. We demonstrate the unity of the church. We celebrate what God is doing in other churches instead of criticizing them. We develop alliances with other like-minded churches in order to serve our city together.

I invite your conversation around these principles with me and in your groups.
