Pastor's Points (Continued)
(Continued from top)
CONCERNS I HAVE
- I hope selfless, servant-leaders will take spiritual leadership seriously. The office of pastor, superintendent, bishop are spiritual fulcrum points to change the culture and point people to the Savior of the world, not just vocational mile markers.
- General Conference legislation alone will not change the world. The Local Church offering Christ is the hope of the world. The UMC has an institution sickness. A large percentage of the Local Churches born in centuries past are sick or anemic while denominational approaches protect institutional sacred cows.
- The loss and lack of young leaders who can speak convincingly and fluently to the emerging young culture concerns me. Our systems have boxed them out.
- I hope the fresh and insightful leadership of Korean, Hispanic-Latino, African-American, Islanders, et al will be accepted for the gifts they are and will seize the new day for spiritual leadership.
ISSUES THAT WORRY ME
- I hope the church will not surrender orthodoxy for political or social expediency. What works is not in itself a guide for ministry––obedience is!
- I pray we will not confuse the issues of culture with the mandates of the Church.
- I hope the church will not lose its witness because of division.
- I’m concerned that seminaries will continue to do what they have always done, ignoring new potential and possibilities that may include new education models and global strategies.
- I trust we will not study, organize, meet and talk, and confuse it with Christian action.
- I fear the United Methodist Church will become irrelevant.
MY VISION FOR THE FUTURE OF THE CHURCH
- A new empowerment of laity, including the youth.
- A rebirth of Methodist emphasis on connectionalism and community rooted in accountability, heart and social holiness, and global consequence.
- A renewal of the Wesleyan passion that all persons know Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.
- Fruitful and effective faith communities that are led by effective, servant leaders of competence, conviction, and creativity.
- Local congregations will reclaim their calling to be salt and light in their communities.
- Large people centers of our country will be under the influence of strong United Methodist churches of biblical conviction.
I invite your reflection as well.
