Notes from Our Pastor
Rev. Rodney Wilmouth tells about walking down the corridor of his church building one Tuesday when the door of the Prayer Chapel opened. A well-groomed young man in his 30s walked out. The two men exchanged a hello and kept going on their way, but then the young man turned and called out, “You’re the minister here, aren’t you? Can I speak with you a minute?” As the two of them stood there in the corridor the young man said, “I’ve just inherited a whole lot of money, about $500,000 or so, and I don’t know what to do with it.” Of course, you should never say that to a preacher. But Rodney Wilmouth said, “What do you mean you don’t know what to do with it? Do you mean you don’t know how to spend it?” The young man replied, “No, that’s not my problem at all. I could spend it easy. My problem is I don’t know how to handle money; it handles me. It doesn’t matter how much money I have, it never seems enough. I spend it all, then run up big charge accounts and buy things I can’t afford. I’m afraid I’m going to do the same thing with this inheritance, so I have been asking God to help me.”

Notes from Our Pastor - Continued
Can anybody identify with that young man? Do you handle money or does money handle you? That young man had the good sense to recognize his problem and to seek God’s help. Sometimes it’s hard to see how our financial situations are concerns to God. We tend to put God and spiritual matters in one compartment and our money stuff into another compartment. I believe, however, God is deeply concerned about our money situation, and, in fact, I believe that God wants us to experience financial freedom and financial peace.
I encourage you to read these wise sayings of God and think about their meaning for your financial life:
Proverbs 30:8-9
Ecclesiastes 5:10-11
Proverbs 22:7
Proverbs 3:9-10
Ecclesiastes 5:15
I Timothy 6:17-19
I also want to encourage you to consider participating in Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University where you will learn the biblical principals of financial management. This is a 13 week course, beginning on Wednesday, Sept. 8 through Dec. 8. Childcare is available. You can get more information in the church office or in the Atrium information booth. Don’t let money handle you; rather, learn and follow God’s principles for managing the resources he has blessed you with.
One last word—remember to pray for teachers, administrators and students as the new school year takes off.
