He’s played for two national championships, been named an all-American and won the Outland Trophy. Now, Alabama Crimson Tide lineman Barret Jones will be playing during the Super Bowl--not on the field, but on TV.
For almost ten years the Frazer United Methodist Church television station, WFRZ-TV, has offered an alternative half-time show during the Super Bowl known as “The Real Half-time”. Hosted by pastors Tim Thompson and John Ed Mathison, the show features faith stories from prominent football players or coaches each year. This year Jones will share his faith story. Fellowship of Christian Athletes leader John Gibbons will also speak.
“I feel very blessed to have a relationship with the Lord and the testimony of understanding that earthly trophies are only temporary” says Jones. “I mean, there I was on the national championship team – the pinnacle of the college football world – holding the crystal trophy, but I still knew it didn’t have any eternal value. I held the crystal football, but it didn’t compare to having a relationship with Jesus.”
Jones was active in the Tuscaloosa tornado relief efforts last April as well as travelling to Haiti to help build schools. “Barrett Jones is one of the greatest people I’ve ever had the opportunity to be around,” says coach Nick Saban. “To make that sacrifice two years in a row [travelling to Haiti] when other student-athletes are worried about going to the beach. He’s willing to go give up himself and help people. That speaks volumes for the compassion that he has for other people.”*
WFRZ-TV is channel 34 over the air, 13 on Knology and Charter, and 122 on Brighthouse. The Real Half Time show will be timed to coincide with half time of the Super Bowl game.
