WFRZ: history

The Frazer Television Ministry began in 1983 when the church started televising its 9:40 a.m. worship services on what was then WKAB-TV- Channel 32. The station did not have microwave facilities, nor remote production equipment, so an arrangement was made with Dan Black Productions to videotape the services. Each Sunday morning at 5:30 a.m., the remote truck arrived at the church for the taping of the services. Then, at the conclusion of the 9:40 a.m. services, the tape was rushed to the WKAB-TV studios and televised at 11:00 a.m. Shortly after the weekly telecasts began, Jerry Kemp, a retired General Electric lighting engineer and Frazer member, approached Dr. John Ed Mathison about the lack of broadcast quality lighting in the sanctuary. John Ed enlisted Jerry’s assistance in improving the lighting. In 1985, the church received an opportunity to appear on the “Great Churches in America” series on the ACTS network. The use of television on WKAB-TV, and the subsequent telecasts on the ACTS network marked the beginning of Jerry's involvement in the Television Ministry.

After working on the sanctuary lighting, Jerry felt God’s call to serve full-time as the volunteer television ministry director. He placed an ad in the church bulletin for volunteers to serve in the TV ministry. Twelve people responded to the call for volunteers (several of those individuals continue to serve in the ministry). Jerry felt the need to have church volunteers film the worship service. The local television station personnel trained Frazer’s volunteers to direct the service, operate cameras, and assist with sound. After a year, the church decided to invest in its own equipment to set up a production facility. The initial investment for the in-house facility was $170,000. The money was used to purchase cameras and other equipment to produce all worship services in-house.

In 1992 Jerry proposed the possibility of establishing a low-power television to John Ed and the church leadership. Jerry's desire was to provide a family-friendly channel to reach the tri-county area with the good news of Jesus Christ. The church embraced the idea and the plans moved forward for the station. The local cable system was supportive and helpful in the process. They offered a local channel for its use as a 24-hour a day station.
The application for the FCC license went smoothly and by June of 1992 Frazer Christian Television, now known as WFRZ, was on the air. The workload of the ministry increased greatly after the station was established.

Jerry Kemp became a full-time staff employee and began to serve as the director. Church member, Aleta Fountain was added as the second full-time employee. Jerry is quick to say that he knew absolutely nothing about running a television station or maintaining the equipment. The lesson Jerry and his volunteers quickly learned is that God provides for the needs of His ministry.

Not only was God doing a mighty work within the local station, but the ministry of the "The Frazer Family Hour," service continued to flourish as well. Tapes of the worship service were sent to the Middle East, Russia, and throughout Europe for broadcast. In addition, the service could be seen across the United States on the national television network, FamilyNet. In 1995 the ministry broadened its nationwide outreach while partnering with The Inspiration Network. This broadcast gave the ministry the potential of reaching 45 million households in the United States.

This national broadcast was ended in November 2007. Frazer has redirected its effort to reach others to its web site where we can reach the entire world. You can now watch our services on demand by clicking here or visiting www.FrazerUMC.org. You can also obtain more information about ordering DVD copies by clicking here.

In 1996 Frazer Christian Television moved into its present 5,000 square foot facility. Seven additional employees have joined the television ministry team in full-time and part-time positions. In addition, more than 80 volunteers serve the television ministry.
Locally, WFRZ Frazer Christian Television is broadcast on the three cable systems in the area. Two of the systems, Knology and Charter, have fiber optic links to the station. The cable system in the neighboring county, Brighthouse Networks, picks up the station from a transmitter. WFRZ viewers can watch the station on Charter and Knology Cable Channel 13, Brighthouse Networks Cable Channel 19, and UHF 34 throughout Montgomery, Prattville, Millbrook, Wetumpka, Tallassee, Selma, and the surrounding area. As of 5/14/2007, the FCC has granted WFRZ permission to begin construction on our low power digital signal. This is part of the switch from analog to digital signals that must be completed by Febuary 17, 2009. Read more at www.dtv.gov on what this means and how it could affect you. Also, you can click here to see what the proposed radius looks like with the new digital signal.
